In 1922 the City of Athens granted an area to the football club Panathinaikos for the erection of a new stadium and while the works started immediately they were interrupted due to trouble with refugees from the Asia Minor Catastrophe who were also claiming the area. The differences are resolved and Panathinaikos inaugurated the stadium in 1924, and from 1981 with the name Apostolos Nikolaidis, which apart from some periods of time was the permanent home of the team. Nowadays, there are areas for the training of the amateur athletes, a swimming pool and a indoors gym.
