At the western entrance of Athens, at the forest of Chaidari, is the Daphni Monastery.

It was built in the 6th century over the ruins of the ancient sanctuary of Apollo Daphnaios and is protected by a yard, fortified with towers and bastions.

It has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Monument of UNESCO, since the architecture, the size and the mosaics of unparalleled beauty of the 11th century place it among the most important monuments of the Byzantine period.
