The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni is located in a dense pine tree forest on the northwestern side of the island, at the area of Faneromeni. It was founded in 1682 from saint Laurent and his wife. It is richly decorated with icons and wall paintings that include 3,500 representations and those of the church of Agios Nikolaos are the work of 1735 from the artist Georgios Markos. During the Revolution the monastery operated as a shelter for civilians, a hospital and as a place where the Greek fighters met. Nowadays, the church functions as a museum with historical relics.
