The first state theatre of the country was constructed after a donation by Efstratios Rallis and was inaugurated in 1901 as the Royal Theatre. In 1908 it was closed indefinitely and in 1930 it became established as the National Theatre. Its mission is to promote intellectual cultivation and the preservation of cultural identity through the art of the theatre.
