Insightful and astute Evangelos Zappas funded in 1859 the construction of a building for hosting exhibitions and services due to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. After many adventures and the death of Zappas, the Greek government granted an area next to the National Garden. The impressive neoclassical building with a propylon of Corinthian order and the impressive gardens was inaugurated in 1888 after a study by Theophil Hansen. At the peristyle of the Mansion they buried the head of Zappas according to his request.
