Large groves, green areas and residential zones are the characteristics of the areas of northwestern Athens. Some of the municipalities have an ancient origin, like Pefki and Neo Irakleio, while most of them were shaped when the Asia Minor refugees arrived. Metamorfosi, famous in the past for its taverns, is a modern area with intense commercial activity, like Neo Irakleio, which has the most commercial activity, and Nea Ionia. Lycovrysi and Pefki are almost exclusively residential areas.
