The Metropolis of Aegina, a three-aisled basilica with three red domes, was built in 1806 with the donations of the residents and the monastery of Panagia Chrisoleontissa. Here the first government of the newly founded Greek state took the oath of office and the stall of Kapodistrias survives to the present days. At the Metropolis there were many historical relics like the marble screen of 1871, the icons of the 19th century and the wall paintings of the artist Vassilios Stamatiadis. The large bell tower was a donation by Kapodistrias.
