The mansion of the Academy of Athens was constructed in an area donated by Petrakis Monastery with the expenses of the expatriate businessman from Vienna Simon Sinas. Its construction was completed in 1885. The architect Theophil Hansen, under the supervision of Ernst Ziller, gave to Athens an excellent neoclassical example of Ionic order of marble from Penteli and stone from Peiraiki.
