The impressive Melas Mansion which is located at Kotzias square was the largest and most expensive private building of his era. Designed by Ernst Ziller, according to the buildings of Vienna, it was built in 1874 after an order by the expatriate merchant Vassilios Melas, in order to operate as the "Grand Hotel d’Αthenes. This never happened and after the death of the owner it housed the Stock Market, the Athenian Club and finally in 1900-1973 the Central Post of Athens.
