The Museum is housed at a neoclassical mansion of the 19th century, at the district of Plaka, under the Acropolis. Its collections include items and works of art from the prehistoric period to modern times, which demonstrate the continuity of the Greek civilization through the centuries. At the expansion of the Museum, impressive is the preservation of the ruins of a medieval house, while important is the collection of Byzantine icons and fayum.
