At the centre of the island, at an area filled with lentisks and cedars, is the Monastery of Panagia Chrisoleontissis which was built there in approximately 1600 BC in order to avoid the raids by the pirates. The monastery resembles a fortress, compact with turrets, embrasures and small windows on its exterior while the square façade opens at the central atrium where is the chapel with the elaborate carved screen, the beautiful wall paintings and the icon of Panagia Chrisoleontissa.
