Kapnikarea Kapnikarea Kapnikarea Kapnikarea Kapnikarea Kapnikarea Kapnikarea
The Byzantine church of Isodia tis Theotokou, known as Kapnikarea, is located at Ermou street, the most commercial street of the capital.

The name Kapnikarea probably comes from the surname of the owner. It was constructed in the 11th century, it has suffered a lot of damages and alterations, while it was almost demolished since it obstructed the city planning of the new Greek capital.

Architecturally it belongs to the type of complex cross-in-square church with a dome and on the northern side they added the chapel of Agia Varvara.

The church is built according to the cloisonné system of masonry of the Middle Byzantine period, while at its interior you can admire the wall paintings by the important writer and painter Photis Kondoglou.
