The Greek National Opera was founded in 1939 organizing performances at Ziller building at Agiou Konstantinou street. From 1958 to the present day it has been housed at theatre Olympia, at Academias street. This event signaled a period of flourishing for the National Opera, with its schedule including 20 productions a year, premieres, as well as performances at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. A very important moment was the appearance of Maria Callas in 1940. Since then top personalities have appeared at its stages and have enchanted the spectators. The repertoire of the only Opera house in Greece covers four centuries of works, from Monteverdi to the modern Greek creators.
