The present day picture of Athens is due to the abrupt urbanization and the movement of the rural population in the 1950s. The need to house a large number of people quickly and cheaply led to hasty rebuilding without any planning and as a result most of the wonderful neoclassical buildings of Athens were demolished. Combined with the absence of any city-planning made Athens pay for past since with lots of cement and minimum green areas. However, what impresses is the “coexistence” of all the historical stages of the city that creates the most beautiful, weird and peculiar images one can face in a city.
